Boat Lift Sizing Guide: Choosing the Right Lift for Your Boat

February 9, 2026 Deep Blue Builders Expert reviewed

A boatlift sized wrong is a boatlift that fails, and a boat that ends up in the water at the worst moment. Getting the capacity right is not complicated, but it requires knowing your real numbers, not the sticker number.

The 1.5 times rule

As a rule, choose a lift rated for at least 1.5 times your boat's loaded weight. The rating needs headroom for gear, fuel, batteries, water, and the people on board when you retrieve the boat.

A 5,000 pound boat with fuel, gear, and a fishing crew can easily weigh 7,000 pounds on a heavy day. A lift rated for 7,500 pounds gives you the safety margin that keeps your boat, and your dock, safe.

Know your real weight

The manufacturer's dry weight is only the starting point. Add in everything you carry, and be honest about it. Twin engines, a hardtop, a full fuel tank, and all your gear add up fast.

If you are between capacities, round up. The small extra cost of a larger lift is nothing compared to a dropped boat or a strained motor.

Match the lift to your dock

Capacity is only half the equation. The lift must also fit your dock, your water depth, and your boating habits.

Freestanding lifts work well when you have open water beside the dock. Dock mounted lifts save space but require a dock strong enough to carry the load. We check your structure before we recommend a mounting approach.

Beam and length matter too. A lift rated for your weight but too narrow for your beam is not the right lift. We confirm all the dimensions during the site assessment.

Let a professional confirm it

Most lift problems we see start with an underpowered or misconfigured system. A quick site assessment gives you the right capacity, the right mounting, and the right wiring, the first time.
